Arts West and Western Edge Youth Arts are pleased to present two Cultural Competency and Settlement workshops for Artists.
Delivered by Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) trainer, Linette Harriott, this full day workshop explores the essential skills and knowledge required to effectively work with young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
Interactive materials and exercises are designed to be applicable across a broad range of sectors and for work with young people from any community. The training modules draw on CMY’s 28+ years of experience working with young people from diverse migrant and refugee backgrounds. Participants will improve their confidence and capacity to provide a culturally inclusive and responsive service for young people.
The day consists of two workshop as set out below.
1. Culturally Competent Youth Practice (3 ½ hours)
Explore concepts of culture and identity
Explore the cultural competency framework
Reflect on cross-cultural interactions and communication skills
Identify and apply cultural competency practice strategies to support effective work with young people
Case studies, activities, small group discussions, and more.·
2. Young People and Settlement (2 ½ hours)
Identify key pre-settlement experiences for young people, particular those with a refugee background
Explore factors which impact on good settlement for young people
Identify and apply strategies for supporting good settlement
Case studies, activities, small group discussions, and more.

Linette Harriott has extensive experience in designing and leading training and facilitation projects and consulting across the community, not for profit and government sectors. Linette has hosted conferences and training with a broad range of audiences from educators to engineers and health professionals to Aboriginal community workers.
She is skilled at teaching a range of facilitation tools and techniques and holds a Diploma in Health Counselling from La Trobe University. An experienced coach, counsellor, trainer and educator Linette has worked for 32 years in welfare services including counselling, service provision, leadership and management roles.
She is currently working for the Centre for Multicultural Youth as the Sector Support and Youth Leadership coordinator, delivering a range of training and forums for all sectors.
