Western Metro Arts and Culture Forum: Meet the Candidates for the 2018 Victorian Election

Arts West has invited candidates for the Victorian state election in November to share their vision for arts and culture in the west. This is an opportunity to meet your local candidates, hear their policies and ask them questions over morning tea about the ways they will support your arts practice and foster cultural participation in Melbourne’s west. Facilitated by Karen Jackson.

Director, Moondani Balluk (embrace people) Indigenous Academic Unit, Victoria University

Karen Jackson is a Yorta Yorta woman, a Footscray resident and Director of the Moondani Balluk at Victoria University. Karen is an advocate for culturally safe spaces that enable Aboriginal people to aspire to personal, family and community goals; land rights and the recognition of Sovereign Peoples; and the delivery of relevant educational and community-based programs by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people.

She has held membership in the Ilbijerri Theatre Co-operative, Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, the Western Metropolitan Indigenous Family Violence Regional Action Group, and the Western Metropolitan Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee. She is currently Co-Chair of the Wyndham Aboriginal Community Centre Committee and the Footprints for Success Early Years Project.

Karen is also a current member of FCAC’s Indigenous Advisory Group.
